There’s something really special about bringing the whole family together, especially when everyone has traveled a long way to be in the same place.
For this extended family session in Kilkenny, Ireland, I had the opportunity to photograph a family traveling from the United States and document their time together in a way that felt natural, relaxed, and completely them.
When families travel to Ireland, there’s often a lot packed into the trip: sightseeing, castles, countryside drives, good food, and trying to fit as much as possible into a limited amount of time. But sometimes the moments you’ll treasure most aren’t the big sightseeing experiences. They’re the little interactions happening in between.
A grandmother laughing with her grandchildren. Siblings teasing each other. Parents watching their children play. A quiet conversation between two people who haven’t seen each other in far too long.
Those are the moments I love photographing.
As a family photographer in Kilkenny, my goal isn't to create a gallery filled with everyone standing in a perfect line and smiling at the camera.
Of course, we’ll make sure we get those important photos, especially when an extended family has traveled together and wants a photograph with everyone in it.
But I also want to give you photographs that bring you right back to how it felt to be together.
The hugs.
The laughter.
The little looks between family members.
The kids running around.
The grandparents soaking it all in.
The moments when everyone forgets the camera is there.
These in-between moments are often my favorite images from a family session because they tell the story of your family as it really is.
Extended family sessions can be a little different from a typical family photo session. There are more people, more personalities, and usually a few different generations involved.
That’s exactly what makes them so meaningful.
Rather than spending the entire session posing everyone, I like to create a relaxed environment where your family can interact naturally. We’ll photograph the different family groupings you want, but we’ll also leave room for the kids to be themselves and for everyone to simply enjoy being together.
For families visiting from the United States, an extended family photography session in Kilkenny can also become part of the story of your Ireland trip.
Years from now, these photographs won't just remind you what everyone looked like.
They’ll remind you that this was the trip when the whole family was together in Ireland.
One of my favorite things about photographing families visiting Ireland is that I get to preserve a small piece of their travel story.
You may have spent months planning your Ireland vacation. You’ve chosen the places you want to see, figured out the logistics, packed your bags, and traveled thousands of miles to get here.
A professional family photography session gives you something you can't get from a phone snapshot: photographs that show the entire family together, fully present in the experience.
And you don't have to spend the session worrying about whether everyone is looking at the camera.
I'll guide you when needed, but I'll also encourage the interactions, movement, laughter, and little moments that make your family yours.
My approach to family photography is relaxed, natural, and a little bit photojournalistic.
I want your photographs to feel like memories rather than a collection of poses.
That might mean walking together, letting the kids explore, cuddling up with grandparents, playing with the little ones, or simply talking and laughing together.
I'll step in when you need direction and step back when something beautiful is unfolding naturally.
The result is a gallery filled with both beautiful portraits and genuine moments of connection.
If you're traveling to Ireland from the United States and planning to spend time in Kilkenny, consider making professional family photographs part of your trip.
Whether you're traveling with your immediate family, bringing grandparents along, celebrating a milestone, or gathering several generations together, an extended family session is a wonderful way to document this particular moment in your family's story.
I'm based in South Kilkenny and photograph families throughout Kilkenny and the surrounding areas, including families traveling through Ireland who want relaxed, meaningful photographs of their time together.
Because someday, the details of the trip may start to fade.
The photographs won't.
I'd love to photograph your family while you're in Ireland.
If you're looking for a Kilkenny family photographer for your Ireland vacation, extended family gathering, or multigenerational family trip, get in touch and tell me a little about your plans.
We'll create photographs that capture more than what your family looked like that day.
We'll capture what it felt like to be together.
